Seven Ways to Lift Writers Up

TIPS TO SUPPORT YOURSELF AND LIFT UP OTHERS ON THE WRITING JOURNEY.

Most of us don’t intentionally tear ourselves or others down. Yet we often fail to lift up fellow writers by missing opportunities to support and encourage one another. In no particular order, here are some tips to help you lift up others – and yourself – on the writing path.

1. OFFER SUPPORT.

Self-doubt plagues us all from time to time. If your writer-self has lost its way, or if you see a fellow writer struggling, reach out a hand. Listen without judgment, offer a smile, and share a few positive words. A simple, “I’m here for you” can help a struggling writer find their way.

2. RESPECT DIFFERENCES.

As lovers of creativity and expression, we wouldn’t want everyone to be – or write – the same. Diversity, different ideas, and unique perspectives add depth and color to our experience of life. Responding to ideas that are different from our own by sharing a few words such as, “I appreciate your perspective” or “This made me think” can help a writer feel heard.

3. BE AUTHENTIC.

Just as we contribute positively by expressing and sharing our own truth, so too do we support others when we are authentic in our interactions. Pretending to like something we don’t only undermines trust and wastes the opportunity to offer authentic encouragement. By focusing on what we like and appreciate – and communicating it respectfully – everyone benefits.

4. BE A LIGHT.

As Thomas Jefferson once observed, “A candle loses nothing when it lights another candle.” If you have insights, leads, ideas, or anything else that could help another writer thrive, consider sharing it. By increasing cooperation and collaboration, we are all made stronger.

5. RECOGNIZE CONNECTIONS.

We are in many ways more alike than we realize. Explore the lessons that have come before you, and seek the wisdom available to you now. Make use of connections by asking yourself what you can learn from others and what insights can you offer in return.

6. PRACTICE COMPASSION.

Even writers with the thickest skin can get hurt. Imagine what others might be going through and be mindful of what they might be feeling or how they could be affected. Choose to share words that help them feel seen and show them they are not alone.

7. TAKE RESPONSIBILITY.

It is up to each of us to do what we can rather than ignore or pass off needs as someone else’s problem. Just as we would help a person to cross the street, so too can we step up and offer encouragement, solidarity, and support to other writers who need it.

Most importantly, put into action what you feel will make the most positive impact. What will encourage creativity, support expression, and add more beauty to the world? Practice lifting writers up, and see how it ultimately benefits us all.
